When does Upper Newport Bay get busy? Not in July. The bay's peak population arrives as the beach towels go back in the garage. Shorebirds and ducks fly in from Arctic Alaska and western Canada and stay through winter. Newport Bay Conservancy says the bay can hold up to 30,000 birds on a single winter day. OC Parks puts its own figure higher, at as many as 35,000 birds at one time during winter migration. Either way, the bay next to Dover Shores is most crowded from now until early spring, and most of that crowd has feathers.
This year the human calendar lines up with the bird calendar. Between now and January there is a new half marathon, a science center open house, naturalist kayak tours, monthly bird walks, pontoon trips and three king-tide windows. The common thread is timing. Fall on the Back Bay runs on two clocks, the season and the tide, and the best mornings come when you read both.
The Season Clock
Newport Bay Conservancy names the winter arrivals: western sandpipers, marbled godwits, long-billed curlews, plovers and other sandpipers. A Conservancy naturalist article adds American wigeon, cinnamon teal and white-crowned sparrow to the winter list.
The window has an end date. The Conservancy says many of these migrants head north again in February and March. So the stretch from October to roughly the end of winter is the bay at full capacity. A walk in April covers the same trail with a much thinner cast.
The Tide Clock
Within the season, the tide sets the schedule. The Conservancy describes the routine plainly. Shorebirds feed on exposed mudflats at low tide and rest at high tide, while ducks feed out on the water.
In practice, two walks at the same spot on the same day can look completely different. At low tide the mud is open and the godwits and curlews are working it. At high tide the shorebirds are resting and the open water belongs to the ducks. If you have only seen the bay on random weekend afternoons, a tide chart will show you a different place.
The tide clock also runs to extremes. The California King Tides Project lists three Southern California king-tide windows this winter:
- November 24–26, 2026
- December 23–25, 2026
- January 21–22, 2027
All three fall inside the migration season. These are the highest tides of the year, so the mudflats will be covered more than usual on those dates.
October 18: A Road Race Returns to the Bay
On Sunday, October 18, the 42nd Newport Spirit Run adds something the bay hasn't hosted in more than 20 years: a half marathon through Upper Newport Bay. It starts and finishes at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina, 1131 Back Bay Drive.
The new distance has a local dedication. Stu News Newport reported on October 6 that the half marathon honors Juan Ramirez, a runner in the local running community. He ran around the bay every week, usually more than once, and stopped to say hello to people he knew along the way. The route passes the Juan Ramirez water fountain, which was built as a tribute to him.
"There's an especially meaningful detail on the fountain plaque which pictures him; he is wearing a Spirit Run bib from the year he won the 10k."
Race morning starts early. Registration opens at 6:00 a.m., the adult competitive mile starts at 7:00, the half marathon at 7:15 and the 5K race/walk at 7:30. The youth mile follows at 8:45, the family mile at 9:00, the beach dash at 9:50 and the toddler trot between 10:00 and 10:30. Packet pickup is Saturday, October 17, from noon to 4:00 p.m. at Newport Dunes. The half marathon has a 3.5-hour time limit. The organizer warns that water stations and finish services may close earlier because roads have to reopen.
That road-reopening line is the only hint of traffic impact in the race materials so far. Organizers say the route uses Back Bay Road and paths through the wetland and nature-reserve areas. The full sequence of named streets isn't spelled out, and no specific closure hours have been posted. The schedule page says details will be finalized October 12. If you plan a Sunday-morning drive or bird walk near the bay that day, check the race site after the 12th.

A few notes on the table. The Conservancy's kayak tours are described as especially good in winter, when migratory shorebirds, ducks and grebes arrive. That makes the December dates the ones to book first. The Back Bay Science Center open house is a rare chance to see the teaching and aquatic labs, not only the trail outside.
Sea & Sage Audubon runs its Upper Newport Bay walk as a monthly outing on the last Sunday. It looks for seasonal shorebirds, ducks, grebes, herons and egrets. On a day with no event, the Muth Interpretive Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free.
One Trail Status to Check Before You Go
The Sea & Sage walks meet at the Big Canyon parking lot, and that corner of the bay has been under construction. Newport Bay Conservancy's Big Canyon Project page says Phase III work continues. It also says all through trails in Big Canyon Nature Park, from the Back Bay Drive parking lot to Jamboree, are temporarily closed "until likely the end of August 2026." Back Bay Drive and the parking lot stay open.
August has passed, but the page hasn't posted a reopening notice. Treat the canyon trails as unconfirmed until the Conservancy updates it. The construction is restoring 14 acres of historical salt marsh and adding transitional wetland habitat. That's more habitat for the same birds filling the calendar above.
Closer to Home on the Same Weekends
Some fall dates don't involve the water at all. On Saturday, October 24, the same day as Boo at the Bay, the City of Newport Beach holds its free 9th Annual Halloween Spooktacular. It runs 3–6 p.m. at Mariners Park & VJ Community Center, 1300 Irvine Avenue, with trunk-or-treat, a haunted walkthrough, games, costume contests and food trucks. Families can do the bay in the morning and Irvine Avenue in the afternoon.
Dreamers Markets brings free, family-friendly artisan markets to Westcliff Plaza on November 7 and December 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The December market falls between the first two king-tide windows. You could catch an early low tide on the mudflats and still make the market before noon.
Westcliff Plaza is also getting a grocery anchor. Irvine Company Retail announced on May 5, 2026, that Whole Foods Market is a future addition to the center at Westcliff Drive and Irvine Avenue. No opening date has been announced, so it won't be part of this season.
Further out, the 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade is scheduled for December 16–20, with nightly starts around 6:30 p.m. Organizers list Marina Park, 1600 W. Balboa Boulevard, as a free public viewing site. The parade site has some conflicting date wording lower on the page, so check the nightly schedule before you go.
If you live in Dover Shores, the bay is part of daily life, and Cadence Real Estate likes to know it the same way, season by season and tide by tide. If you have a question about what the Back Bay means for a home nearby, let's get started.
